Who should buy iRobot Roomba 960

  • The Roomba 960 is a perfect fit for those who are looking for a balance of affordability and functionality. Among Roomba robot vacuums, the Roomba 960 is the cheapest you can get and utilizes both a camera and sensors for navigation that provide a smart and accurate map.
  • This robot vacuum is for those who are living in small houses or apartments because of its short battery that can last for 70-75 mins.
  • Families with pets and kids would love this robot vacuum because of its quietness and tangle-free brush. It utilizes a dual multi-surface rubber brush that is good at picking up human and pet hairs without them getting tangled with the main brush.
  • It is fit for homes that have different floor types because it can easily transition across carpets, bare floors, and other types of floors without getting stuck.
  • The Roomba 960 is also suitable for those who have high-traffic rooms because of its smart navigation and obstacle avoidance sensor. With this, it does not drag or push objects across the room that can lead to a further mess.

Who should NOT buy iRobot Roomba 960

  • If you have a large house, the Roomba 960 won’t please you as much because of its short span of battery life. However, it can automatically recharge and resume to where it left so it is not much of a problem if you don’t mind it taking a break between cleaning cycles.
  • The Roomba 960 doesn’t have the carpet boost that the Roomba 980 has so those with heavily carpeted homes might want to look for other robot vacuums that can deeply clean their high-pile carpets.

This is our verdict of the iRobot Roomba 960 based on several hours of research of reviews from both experts and users.

The Roomba robot vacuums originate from a big brand that has an impressive reputation and high expectations. The Roomba 960, will definitely meet or even exceed your expectations because of its smart features and outstanding performance. However, all great things also have flaws and the Roomba 960 is not exempt from this.

The Roomba 960 utilizes a camera and sensors (iAdapt 2.0 Navigation and vSLAM) to thoroughly navigate the floor and provide an accurate map that can be seen in the app. With this, it won't randomly bump everywhere like its succeeding Roomba vacuums. The Roomba 960 can clean the whole floor with a systematic pattern and not miss a spot.

Additionally, it utilizes advanced sensors that allow the robot vacuum to clean efficiently and carefully. It has a dirt detector sensor that if a high concentration of dirt is detected, such as at edges or high-traffic areas, it will give more attention to that area. The Roomba 960 also offers an obstacle avoidance sensor that helps the robot vacuum dodge furniture and lessens the impact on the obstacle, leaving the furniture unscratched.

Moreover, it has a cliff sensor that is helpful for those who have stairs so that the robot vacuum will not fall on the edge. However, this sensor may falsely identify black or dark-colored edges of carpets to be a cliff and it might avoid that area resulting in an uncleaned carpet.

Another smart feature of this robot vacuum is that it utilizes a dual multi-surface rubber brush that solves one of the common problems that most robot vacuums have. It can easily pick up hair from the floor without it getting stuck at the main brush which is helpful for those who have heavy shedding pets or those who often have hair on the floor. It also offers a 5x stronger power suction than the 600 series which enables it to provide efficient cleaning on different floor types especially on low-pile carpets and bare floors.

The Roomba 960’s battery life is not that impressive unlike its other features because it can only last for 70-75 mins, hence, it might not be able to cover the whole floor of a large house. However, it is not that big of a deal because the robot vacuum works fast and it has a recharge and resume feature. Before it reaches its battery limit, the Roomba 960 finds its way home to recharge, and then it resumes to where it left off to finish the cleaning cycle.

This robot vacuum also offers a virtual wall that can restrict it to operate in a linear line or circular radius. However, the slightly expensive Roomba 960 only provides one virtual wall which can be a bit disappointing if you have a lot of areas that you don’t want the robot vacuum to go to.

Another downside of this robot vacuum is that it does not support automatic carpet boost unlike the high-end Roomba 980. Therefore, it may not clean high-piled carpets thoroughly because of the lack of airflow.

Overall, despite the Roomba 960's few flaws, it is already a great deal for those who are looking for an affordable robot vacuum that provides smart features and quality performance.
